Methanation Catalyst

In hydrogen and ammonia production units, BR Metha 203/203R Methanation Catalyst is used to facilitate the reaction of low-concentration carbon oxides (such as CO and CO2) with excess hydrogen to produce inert gas CH4 and easily removable H2O, achieving gas purification and protecting downstream catalysts.

The reaction equations are as follows:  

CO + 3H2 = CH4 + H2O      ΔH0  298 = -206.2 KJ/mol

CO2 + 4H2 = CH4 + 2H2O    ΔH0  298 = -165.0 KJ/mol

Characteristic:

  • Methanation reaction is a convenient and cost-effective method for gas purification, reducing carbon oxide concentrations to as low as 10-6 (V/V) levels,With proper design and normal operation, the outlet CO + CO2 concentrations are typically reduced to below 10×10-6 (V/V),
  • The catalyst in large hydrogen and ammonia production units can have a lifetime of over 5 years.
